Closed up for the winter with plenty of hay in store!

The farm is closed for the winter though we still have plenty of hay for everyone, the barn is still packed! Timothy is great for all your pets small and large. Our rabbits eat the timothy all day long, that is their main diet. We do feed some pellets and others fresh veggies as well. Oat hay is one of the treats we give them and they like that lots. Remember your rabbit, chinchilla, or guinea pig likes to have variety in their diet, hay can be feed always and it keeps you bunny busy.

We gave out these samples at the ARBA, we had timothy and oat hay to give out. The rabbits here really liked the green timothy and the oat hay. Lots of the rabbits had been brought a long way and would only eat the oat hay because it helped with their upset, nervous stomaches.

ARBA Convention San Diego 09

Here we are at the ARBA convention in San Diego this year. We gave out hay samples to everyone who visited our booth. There was timothy hay, oat hay, alfalfa/timothy mix, and others. We also included a brochure that has information about us and our online hay store that sells pet hay. Bear the Rabbit

Here is Bear he is tentative to get out of his cage, but once he is out he loves to run around and explore. He really likes to come up to you and sniff you. He also has not chewed his hay ball up, he likes to grab it and throw it in the air. The other rabbit we have has already chewed it to pieces and wants a new one.

This is the girl lionhead rabbit we recently got, at the ARBA convention. She is shown here in her new hidey hole that we made out of a cardbaord box, she has not tried to eat it, but loves to be in it. Rabbits do feel safe in places like this and their cage should probably have something like it so they can go in it and feel safe and protected.

In front is her hay ball which both rabbits love, they like pulling the hay out and nibbling on the ball as well.

Lionhead Rabbit BEAR

Here is one of the rabbits, the boy named Bear, as of now we are still trying it out but he does remind us of a little black bear. He is really sweet, likes to jump and kick out his hind feet on the run. His fur is so soft and we do have to brush him about 3 times a week or every other day to keep it looking nice and not too matted around his tummy. He loves the newspaper as you can see and also hiding behind anything he can.

This breed of rabbit really likes to stand on its hind legs and check things out!

Greetings from Sierra Valley Hay!

Here is a picture of one of the boxes of hay we sell full of the timothy hay which as you can see is super green. Hay is really nutritional for all your pets: rabbits, chinchillas, guinea pigs, and other small herbivores. We also sell our hay by the bales to local horse owners, llama lovers, goat and sheep owners, and dairy men.

Old Combine

This is an old combine (it was used to strip oats from the stems) that my dad aquired as his first piece of junk on the farm when he bought it in 1979. He of course had no junk of his own yet so the man he was buying the land from let him keep it. It was hauled to the arch way where you enter our place and is still there today. Its a favorite place for rabbits to hide.

This looks amazing right?? Green hay, blue skies, big hills, and fresh air. This is what the city people miss out on, but then the country lacks lots of things the city certainly does not. One thing that is true of both places is you can have a pet rabbit, chinchilla, guinea pig, or other small herbivores in either. They are all small pets and can be kept in cages or let to run around the house. Rabbits are now trained to use a litter box like a cat which is great for rabbits because they have so much freedom to run around this way.

Stacking Yard Full of Hay

This is a couple years ago, but it looks the same every year. This is the stacking yard where hay goes that does not fit in the barn near the end of the summer. At that point we have finished all 3 cuttings and have not sold all of it yet so here it sits for a while. This stack is sometimes bigger sometimes smaller it just depends on how much hay we had in the fields that summer.

Raking Hay

This is Christina raking hay. This is done after the top of the alfalfa row is dried and is really helpful for drying the bottom of the wind row when the wind rows are really big. This is raking two rows into one which also makes baling faster since there are less rows to get around. Notice the hay is very green which is easier for us to achieve than other farms because our location. Where we live its a very dry climate which helps the hay to dry out fast leaving it in the sun for less time so less bleaching takes place.

Hay Field Full of Bales

This is another picture from this summer of one of the hay fields full of bales waiting to be picked up.

The valley where are farm is which is named Sierra Valley is the size of Lake Tahoe approximately. We are about an hour away from Tahoe as well just over the mountains. Wer are at 5,000ft. elevation so we do get snow in the winter, not as much as Tahoe but enough to play in, and have snow days declared at the schools.

This is what the oats look like when they are in the wind rows. Its has just been cut so it is nice and fluffy but as it dries out the size will shrink by half. The moisture will evaporate and the tasty seeds your rabbits, chinchillas, guinea pigs etc. love will still be there waiting to be baled. The baler comes around and packs the hay into 100lbs bales that go to the barn to wait for someone to need it. Horses, cows, llamas, donkeys, rabbits, chinchillas, guinea pigs along with lots of other animals love oat hay. It is not the main diet it is more like a treat and a feel good snack for your pets.

This is what the ranch looks like at the onset of winter. Everything is dead or in hibernation. An old tractor and the dogs are there in the distance, as well as the pump house which houses one or our wells that feeds our land with water.

The views out here are amazing, the clear blue skies and you would not even believe the amount of stars you can see at night. In winter the specs on white on the mountains surrounding the valley really remind you its winter but also just make you stop and take a breath and enjoy the cold fresh air.

Right now the alfalfa is in hibernation underground. The freezing temps to freeze the ground but not deep enough to kill the seeds that will sprout in the early summer.

Busy Rabbits = Happy Rabbits

Well hay is of course meant to be eaten and enjoyed by your rabbit or chinchilla, or other herbivores you feed hay to. It can sometimes just keep them busy which keeps them happy. Animals like to be occupied just like us they get bored and hay is a great no-boredom remedy.

They can chew on the stems, pick of the green leaves in the alfalfa, find the seeds in the oat hay, and whatever else all day long. They can just enjoy themselves while being healthy and active all day long. When they eat it all you can feel free to give them more it is good for them.

To all you pet lovers out there! Pets are such a part of our lives and well being. They make you happy when you are sad and are always there for you when you need them. They don't say much but you just know they are on your side. Now matter what pet you have, a cat, a rabbit, a dog, a chinchilla, they are your family. We have 3 dogs all black and white border collies and now we have to rabbits to add to the mix. Whay a joy it is to have animals that love you always no matter what you look like, no matter your job, now matter your home. This is just a little love blog going out to all the animals that make us humans happy!

So its Sunday night and we just finished a batch of brownies from scratch and thought how we were thinking of trying to come up with a brownie for rabbits. It would be alfalfa instead of chocolate as the main flavor and it would be packed with nutrition and great flavor, what more could a rabbit want??

The picture above is of our barn last year between cuttings, but in present time it is packed to the brim with green hay that we want to keep that way hence the barn.

So maybe this winter we will work on our own version of brownies that are meant for your small pet, how delicious would that be? Let us know if you like the idea!!

New bunny #2

Hey you all, so this is our other new bunny man is she a furry one! It looks like a mini lion with that big mane of hair all around her face. Anyways names are still welcome if you have any suggestions let us know.

This is one of the rabbits we adopted at the ARBA convention, we are still thinking of names so if anyone has any good ideas let us know, post a comment. This is a Lionhead rabbit if you were wondering, and he is a male or buck.

Well it is winter up where we live the rain has come and nights are getting down to around freezing. Lucky for all our customers we have a huge barn that houses all the hay we did not sell during the summer. We have timothy, alfalfa, oats, a wild grass/alfalfa mix, and a timothy/alfalfa mix. We sell online to small pet owners and also to daries, ranchers and horse or large animal owners in the area.

We are headed back from the ARBA convention with 2 very young Lionhead rabbits they are so cute and little and we can't wait to make them a home with us on the farm. We will also be able to give you much more hands on information because we will have our rabbits to tell us a lot about what they like best. This is a picture taken last summer with a big dust devil in the field next to us. These things can really mess up the neat windrows of hay!

ARBA Convention

We are at the ARBA convention right now, it is a big rabbit get together. We are there giving out samples of our hay and learning a lot about all the different breeds of rabbits, meeting lots of great people, and having fun. We have gotten a really great response to our Timothy hay which has always been the case but the oats are gaining interest as well. Rabbits really love the small seeds found in the oat hay. We used to have rabbits, but they have all passed and now we are considering getting another one since all of the people here seem to be enjoying their rabbits as pets like we do our dogs.
